Is the drawing function only an overlay option which cannot actually be saved to the map itself?

No, it is saved to the map (that particular node). Select a particular node, click on 'drawing' and draw something. Observer, the color of drawing icon on that particular node turns blue. After saving and reopening this map, you can see it is indeed saved.
